Presentation:
The Perseu Abramo Foundation presents a qualitative research on the social imagination of the residents of the outskirts of São Paulo. Phenomena such as the advance of consumption, neo-Pentecostalism and popular entrepreneurship are objects of analysis. The investigation demonstrates an intense presence of two liberated values of “faça você mesmo”, of individualism, of competitiveness and of efficiency.
As a general result, one can find a population that tends to believe in politics, but does not believe in parties; recognizes the importance of the community, but clams grow individually; It looks for transformations, but it hardly eliminates ruptures; I crave new ideas, but I am also pragmatic. In short, this new cultural broth will require renewal both in the form in which party politics is carried out and in the content of the public policies that are implemented.
A mix between values of liberalism, of individualism, of promotion by work and of success by merit, with more supportive and collectivist values related to the attuation of the State, to the universalization of rights, to the expansion of social inclusion, allowing us to see the world and the imagination of the new class of workers das peripheries of São Paulo.
