Carlos Henrique Árabe discusses CASB research on the program Debates Le Monde Diplomatique Brasil.

The director of the Perseu Abramo Foundation, Carlos Henrique Árabe, gave an interview to the program Le Monde Diplomatique Brasil, produced in partnership with TVT and TV PUC (SP).

When questioned by Silvio Caccia Bava, he discussed the research “The Working Classes,” produced by the Center for Analysis of Brazilian Society (CASB) and released a few weeks ago.

“With the changes in the working class in the market, there are segments that simply have no chance of retiring, of protection against workplace accidents, and are far from other forms of social security,” assessed Árabe, who coordinated the CASB survey.

The interview also touched upon how Brazilian workers see themselves, their concerns about securing income, and their willingness to organize collectively – in unions, for example.

According to Árabe, app-based workers, for example, do not have a formal political organization, and even the old forms have not yet achieved a degree of “expansion or flexibility” capable of absorbing them.

THE WORKING CLASSES – The CASB investigation was organized in two stages. The first, of a qualitative nature, involved face-to-face interviews with 14 focus groups made up of informal workers from Greater São Paulo: drivers and delivery workers employed by platform companies and professionals in the beauty, care, and cleaning sectors.

Based on the analysis of the collected information, the quantitative phase was carried out, which consisted of 4,017 interviews across the country with the economically active population between 18 and 55 years of age.
