The publisher
The Perseu Abramo Foundation Publishing House had its initial milestone in 1997, launching a book in homage to Perseu Abramo (1929-1996), a sociologist, journalist, and comrade who was active in the Workers’ Party (PT) since its formation in the 1980s.
Antonio Candido chaired the publisher’s first editorial board until 2002. Today, our editorial board is composed of Albino Rubim, Alice Ruiz, André Singer, Clarisse Paradis, Conceição Evaristo, Dainis Karepovs, Emir Sader, Hamilton Pereira, Laís Abramo, Luiz Dulci, Macaé Evaristo, Marcio Meira, Maria Rita Kehl, Marisa Midori, Rita Sipahi, Silvio Almeida, Tassia Rabelo, and Valter Silvério.
The publishing house stands out with its important authors and works in the debate of ideas. This work has captured the attention of activists, researchers, students, and educators interested in socialist and democratic political culture.
We can cite some classics published by our publishing house, such as Marilena Chaui (Brazil: Founding Myth and Authoritarian Society, first volume of the History of the Brazilian People collection), Michael Lowy (Marxism in Latin America), Aloísio Biondi (Privatized Brazil), Jacob Gorender (Colonial Slavery), Denise Paraná (Lula, the Son of Brazil), John French (Lula and the Politics of Cunning), Paul Singer (Introduction to the Solidarity Economy, A Militant Utopia, Development and Crisis), Mario Pedrosa-Leon Trotsky (Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Germany). We have launched Socialism in Debate (booklets resulting from debates organized by the FPA), Urgent Brazil, Classics of Radical Thought (proposed by Antonio Candido, which included Jack London, Stuart Mill, Mark Twain, William Morris), Radical Thought (Milton Santos, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, Mario Pedrosa, Raymundo Faoro), MAG Collection (Marco Aurélio Garcia), among others.
Our publications contribute to training activists with critical analyses of the harsh reality of Brazil, from slavery to current capitalism, debating socialist alternatives, the Workers’ Party’s experiences in government, social struggles, and the organization of the working classes.
